Management Team
Research Director - Barry Dyar manages the development of research resources, as well as overseeing the daily operations of the Hesperus and Ignacio facilities. He coordinates various research projects, and is in charge of the breeding and evaluation program. Barry, an avid wildlife conservationist, has established protected wildlife areas and has been recognized by the Colorado Division of Wildlife for elk tagging and migratory waterfowl introduction projects. He is an ardent outdoorsman and accomplished horseman. Mr. Dyar is a US National Champion Marksman and a US National Polocrosse champion, competing in Australia in 1992.
In 1997, Barry recognized the seriousness of Chronic Wasting Disease and began searching for solutions. He established a state-of-the-art elk breeding operation focusing on the development of CWD resistant animals. In 2002, he founded the Elk Research Institute to expand those efforts. Prior to ERI, Barry owned and operated a construction company, involved in both residential and commercial projects. Mr. Dyar is a graduate of Fort Lewis College in Durango, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology.
Administrative Director - Sharla Maloney is responsible for production of all collateral materials, public relations, and marketing. In addition, Sharla coordinates fundraising projects, and scheduling/organizing, and hands-on participation in educational tours at the Hesperus Preserve. With over fifteen years experience in non-profit organizations, she handles all of the day to day communication, computer data, office management, etc. for ERI. A Durango native, her love of the outdoors and wildlife are a perfect combination with Sharla’s commitment to the Elk Research Institute.
